Jean René Gauguin (1881-1961) var søn af den verdensberømte franske maler Paul Gauguin og dennes danske hustru. Det meste af sit liv tilbragte han i Danmark, hvor han fik sin møbelsnedkeruddannelse, men i høj grad kom til at virke som billedhugger - selvlært og modnet i samspil men Kai Nielsen midt i en blomstring indenfor dansk skulptur i kraft af velstanden sidst i 1910'erne.
