Folmer Bendtsen (1907–1993)
Color lithograph.
An atmospheric depiction of a working-class neighborhood in wintertime, where children play on the ice and passersby move along the snow-covered streets under a pale, cold sun. Bio:
Folmer Bendtsen (1907–1993) was a Danish painter and graphic artist, often referred to as “the painter of the working class.” Born in Copenhagen and trained under Aksel Jørgensen, he became known for his depictions of workers’ lives and environments in Nørrebro, Sydhavnen, and especially the Nordvest district, where he lived. His works are marked by a realist yet atmospheric style, capturing beauty in the seemingly ordinary. Bendtsen is represented in several Danish museums, including the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) and ARoS, and was awarded numerous prizes and honors, including the Order of the Dannebrog in 1964.
