Bio:
Agapito Labios (1898–1996), born Agapito Engel Cifuentes in Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico, was a self-taught painter. He took part in the Mexican Revolution and was later imprisoned, where he began painting on the walls of his prison cell. The mayor of the town noticed his paintings and commissioned him to paint portraits of his two daughters, marking the beginning of his artistic career. Labios subsequently worked mainly as a portrait painter and is known for his naïve and primitive style, frequently depicting children in his compositions.
