Colourful modernist composition depicting a stylised jug and bottle, constructed with strong black outlines and geometric fields of blue, green, red, yellow and orange.
Material: Oil on board.
Dimensions: Visual size 53 × 43 cm, total size 71 × 63 cm.
Period: Mid 20th century.
Condition: Presents in good age-related condition with minor signs of wear.
Bio:
The composition relates to the Scandinavian modernist tradition, in which recognisable objects were frequently simplified and transformed through bold outlines, geometric construction and strong colour contrasts. Still life in particular provided artists with a means of exploring the relationship between figure and pictorial plane, and in this work the jug and bottle are integrated into a dense decorative composition where line and colour are as important as the depicted objects themselves.
