The work was created in the same year Asoma received a Japanese Government scholarship to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.

Bio:
Tadashi Asoma (1923–2017) was a Japanese modernist painter whose international career spanned Japan, France and the United States. He studied at Saitama Teachers College and the Bijitsu Gakko in Tokyo and in 1958 received a Japanese Government scholarship to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. He later studied at the Art Students League in New York and settled permanently in the United States. His oeuvre encompasses both figurative compositions and landscapes and is distinguished by strong areas of colour, textural surfaces and influences from Fauvism and School of Paris modernism. Asoma's work is represented in collections including the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the San Diego Museum of Art.
