Meissen, Set of Four Deep Dinner Plates in Blue Onion Pattern.
Elegant set of four deep dinner plates in white porcelain featuring the classic cobalt-blue underglaze decoration known as Blue Onion, or Zwiebelmuster. The plates have a generous, gently curved shape with broad rims and decorative scalloped edges. The intricate pattern features stylised flowers, leaves and fruit motifs in shades of cobalt blue, inspired by East Asian porcelain. The plates were produced by Meissen around 1900 and bear the factorys distinctive crossed swords mark on the underside. Two incised cancellation lines through the mark indicate second quality. One plate has a small manufacturing defect, as shown in the photograph.

Sometimes, porcelain is classified as second or third quality for no immediately apparent reason. To the everyday observer, these pieces may appear completely flawless. Luxury manufacturers, however, apply exceptionally strict quality standards, meaning that a piece may be downgraded due to a minimal weight discrepancy, a microscopic bubble in the glaze, or a structural variation that is invisible to the naked eye.
Bio:
Meissen was founded in 1710 in Saxony, Germany, and is recognised as Europes first manufacturer of hard-paste porcelain. The factory quickly gained international recognition for its craftsmanship, artistic decoration and exceptional quality. The celebrated Blue Onion pattern was developed around 1730 and drew inspiration from Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. Despite its name, the design primarily depicts stylised flowers and fruits rather than actual onions.
