Sometimes stoneware is classified as second quality without any immediately apparent reason. To the untrained eye, these pieces may appear completely flawless. However, prestigious manufacturers maintain exceptionally strict quality standards, meaning that a piece may be downgraded due to a minute variation in weight, a microscopic air bubble in the glaze, or a structural irregularity that is invisible to the naked eye.
Bio:
Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) was a Swedish ceramicist and sculptor, born in Paris. He worked at Bing & Grøndahl from 1925 to 1928 and in 1928 founded, together with the chemist Nathalie Krebs, the workshop that became Saxbo in 1930. From 1931 to 1955 he worked at Rörstrand, mostly as artistic director, and he is particularly known for his stoneware with matte glazes and his animal figures.
