The Grotta di Pozzuolo, also known as the Grotta di Pozzuoli or Crypta Neapolitana, is an ancient Roman tunnel connecting Naples with Pozzuoli. It became a favored subject among traveling artists of the 18th and 19th centuries, when romantic and archaeological themes were highly appreciated. Gouache works such as this were often created as souvenir pieces for the educated audiences of the Grand Tour.
