Scandinavian modernism of the 1950s and 1960s was characterised by the simplification of figurative subjects and an increasing interest in abstraction, geometry, and the independent expressive qualities of colour. Traditional subjects such as flowers and still lifes were frequently reduced to planes, lines, and rhythmic forms. This work fits clearly within that tradition through its elongated composition, angular vase, and strongly stylised flower.
