Carl-Harry Stålhane for Rörstrand, pair of miniature vases.

Pair of miniature stoneware vases designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane for Swedish manufacturer Rörstrand. The vases feature elegant, organic forms with slender necks and rounded bodies. Their glazes display muted earthy tones in shades of brown, green, yellow and creamy white. One vase is first quality, while the other is marked with a single incised line indicating second quality.

Origin: Sweden.
Designer: Carl-Harry Stålhane.
Manufacturer: Rörstrand.
Material: Glazed stoneware.
Dimensions: H. 4–5.5 cm, D. 3–5 cm.

Sometimes, porcelain is classified as second or third quality for no immediately apparent reason. To the everyday observer, these pieces may appear completely flawless. Luxury manufacturers, however, apply exceptionally strict quality standards, meaning that a piece may be downgraded due to a minimal weight discrepancy, a microscopic bubble in the glaze, or a structural variation that is invisible to the naked eye.
