John Fabian Carlson (1875–1947) was a Swedish-American painter known for his atmospheric landscapes, especially winter scenes. Born in Sweden, he emigrated to the United States as a young man and studied at the Art Students League in New York. Carlson became a leading figure in American Impressionism and later taught and directed the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting. His book Carlson’s Guide to Landscape Painting is considered a classic and remains widely used by artists today.
