Two Hjorth ceramic candlesticks in the shape of angels, executed in glazed faience and hand-decorated in blue and green tones.
The figures depict two standing angels, each holding a candleholder in front of them. One angel is decorated in blue and white with star motifs, the other in green, brown, and white with scrolling leaf patterns. Both feature finely painted facial details and intricately rendered wings.
Date: Circa mid-20th century.
Dimensions: Height 10 cm. x 7,5 cm. width (blue angel)
H. 11,5 cm. x W. 8 cm. (green angel).
Condition: Both in good condition with light signs of wear. Minimal glaze chips.
Mark: Both stamped to the underside: Hjorth, Denmark.
Short biography of Hjorth:
Hjorth Keramik was founded in 1859 by Lauritz Adolph Hjorth in Rønne, on the Danish island of Bornholm. The workshop became renowned for its craftsmanship in stoneware and faience, combining traditional techniques with contemporary artistic trends. Throughout the 20th century, Hjorth created a wide range of popular models, often characterised by hand-painted decoration and distinctive glazes. Today, Hjorth’s works are sought after by collectors both in Denmark and internationally.
