Rectangular panel icon, egg tempera on gilt ground. Depicting the Mother of God with the Christ Child (Hodegetria type), both with haloes. Inscriptions in Church Slavonic.
H. 22 cm. W. 17.5 cm.
Condition: Good, minor wear, craquelure and localised paint loss, corner damages.
Bio: The Orthodox icon tradition dates back to the 6th century and became central to the Russian and Byzantine visual culture. Icons of the Mother of God with Child, such as the Hodegetria type seen here, were among the most widespread and were considered protective images, used both in churches and private homes.
