Gilt bronze Buddha figures have played a central role in Buddhist art throughout Asia for centuries. The figures were created according to traditional iconographic principles, in which posture, hand gestures and clothing carried symbolic meaning. Gilding highlighted the sculptural details and gave the figures a precious and ceremonial appearance, while natural wear over time could reveal the darker bronze surface beneath.
