Expressive figurative composition with two intertwined human figures, executed in mixed media on paper. An upright figure with outstretched arms emerges against a deep dark-grey background, while a reclining figure crosses the lower part of the composition. Pale, roughly drawn contours and occasional reddish and blue accents create a dramatic contrast with the dark pictorial field. The work forms part of a series centred on the death of Christ as its recurring religious theme. Signed in pencil and dated 2018.

Bio:
Nis Schmidt 1932–2025 was a Danish painter and self-taught visual artist whose artistic practice was closely associated with ecclesiastical art and Christian iconography. He completed numerous church commissions, including altar crosses, stained-glass works and reliefs. His visual language is characterised by strongly drawn and often fragmented motifs in which line and colour function as central elements. Throughout his long career, Schmidt combined his extensive knowledge of Christianity with a highly personal and expressive artistic language.
