Kai Nielsen (1882–1924) was one of Denmark’s foremost sculptors, educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen 1902–1906 and one of the most important innovators of Danish sculpture in the early 20th century. His works are characterised by a strong interest in the human body, simplicity, vitality and sensuality. Among his best-known works are “Marmorpigen”, “Ymerbrønden”, the decoration at Blågårds Plads and “Venus with the Apple”.

Christian Tetzen-Lund built up a unique collection of modern Danish, Scandinavian and especially French art in the years around 1916-1924. The collection included works by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, André Derain, Henri Rousseau, Georges Braque and Amedeo Modigliani, among others, as well as Danish artists such as Harald Giersing, Olaf Rude, Vilhelm Lundstrøm and Kai Nielsen. At its peak, the collection comprised around 600 works and was opened to the public from 1917 at Tetzen-Lund’s home in Copenhagen
